No you do not need a referral to access private speech pathology services . However, if you wish to apply for the Medicare rebate you will need a care plan from your GP.
All children are different, presenting with different areas of difficulty. Children also learn at different rates, therefore we are unable to predict how long each child will require therapy for.
Please see our communication milestones chart under the "forms" tab to understand the speech and language expectations at different ages. This is a general guideline, however if you have concerns that your child is not meeting milestones, consult a speech therapist
Yes, it is beneficial to be in the therapy session to learn strategies, gain advice and understand how to encourage further speech or language development outside of the therapy environment. However, this may change depending on the individual child and their preferences. If a child is being seen at childcare or school, progress notes will be sent home after each session.
Before your first appointment, it is helpful to send any previous reports or information regarding your child's additonal supports. Please be sure to provide details if you are claiming a rebate from Medicare (CDM plan), Private Health Insurance or NDIS (self-managed or plan-managed).
Background information and understanding of your goals for your child will be discussed. Rapport building is key to ensuring we build connection and your child feels comfortable with the therapist. If appropriate, direct or indirect assessment tasks will be completed.
Regular listening breaks in the form of fun games and activities are also provided throughout assessment activities, as required.
A separate feedback session (30-45 minutes long) will be arranged after assessment. Your child does not need to attend this feedback session. It can be completed via Telehealth online or face to face. Results of the assessment, outcomes and recommendations will be discussed in detail. Please note that feedback will not take place until assessment fees have been settled in full.
